Isla de Roatán

An island to return to

The biggest sea-related tourist attraction of Honduras are the Islas de la Bahía, an archipelago composed of three main islands and over sixty surrounding minor islands.

During your MSC cruise to the Caribbean, Cuba and Antilles, you will dock at Roatán, the biggest as well as the most developed of the islands.

With a low mountain chain crossing it from end to end, Roatán, like the other islands in the bay, has deep coves protected by coral reefs along the coast facing Honduras, which have proved a safe landing place for ships through the centuries. Its main settlement, Coxen Hole or Roatán Town, took its name from the pirate John Coxon, who seems to have anchored his ship here at the end of the 15th century. Now the times of the pirates are past; however, if you disembark here, you will be able to visit a modern reconstruction of an old galleon at Dixon Cove.

Many other more modern relics dot the coast of Roatán. Some have even become preferred diving sites for scuba divers of all experience levels. By participating in an MSC Cruises excursion, you will be able to visit the western tip of the island where you will pass a pleasant day shopping.  Disembarking from your MSC cruise ship will allow you to explore every corner of Roatán in complete safety. About midway along the island, which is 60 km long, there is a bend in the coast, which protects Parrot Tree Beach and its tourist facilities.

Just a short distance from the open ocean, you will be able to pass a serene day swimming in a lagoon with a sandy bottom, pampered by the services of one of the island’s most beautiful and exclusive resorts. Roatán also has a golf course and several adventure parks where you can have fun with your family darting from tree to tree across suspension bridges and zip lines.

Find out how exhilarating it feels to soar through the rainforest canopy on Roatán’s highest, longest and fastest zip line, featuring double-gliding parallel cables, 18 platforms and 12 breathtaking traverses. Add to that 4 hiking trails and you have a marvellous experience waiting to happen. On reaching the site and getting your gear, you’ll be told what – and what not – to do, after which you can practise on a training cable. Once you’ve then reached the first platform, you’ll initially traverse 3 zip lines over the trees, with superb views of the untouched rainforest to savour. Next up are the other 9 fast-and-fun lines that will have you speeding through the jungle in one thrilling ride after another. Once you’ve returned your gear at the end of your aerial experience, there’ll be time for you to purchase snapshots of your canopy adventure – taken by professional photographers – and have a glass of purified water or a soft drink. Finally, you can choose whether to return straight to the ship or instead enjoy a 1-hour beach break, with the same vehicle later picking you up again at no extra charge. Please note: guests must be at least 7 years of age, weigh no more than 114 kg/250 lbs and not exceed a waist measurement of 127 cm/50 in. to take part. Your tour will finish with a panoramic stop for amazing views of the Caribbean coast, the port and of the far away islands for a great photo opportunity. Honduras

      An unexplored marvel
      An unexplored marvel

Honduras should be visited without haste. An MSC cruise to the Caribbean, Cuba and Antilles can serve as a great introduction to this land. Your ship will sail off the Atlantic coast of Central America, over 600 km of which is occupied by this country.

You will pass the waters were 15th century pirate ships and raiders gave chase to Spanish ships laden with silver. Most of Honduras is still covered by forests and mountains. Even its capital Tegucigalpa is located at an elevation of almost one thousand metres. Its interior contains marvels such as the Mayan ruins of Copán, along the border with Guatemala, and the spotless colonial city of Gracia, adjacent to Parque Nacional Celaque.

Even Lake Yojoa to the west and remote regions such as La Mosquitia to the northeast are destinations of certain interest to nature lovers. Most of the rivers of Honduras flow into the Atlantic Ocean, where the Islas de la Bahía are of particular interest. Until the end of the 19th century, the economy of these islands, like that of the rest of the country, revolved around banana plantations. Today, they rely mainly on fishing and tourism. In fact, their beaches and tropical climate attract the most beautiful cruise ships throughout the year. Specifically, the largest island of the archipelago, Roatan, has become a relaxing destination for a pleasant Caribbean holiday.
