    Cyprus

    The island of love
    The island of love

According to mythology, Cyprus is the birthplace of Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love. One cannot but be reminded of this during you’re a vacation in Cyprus.

    The landscape is spectacular
: the low, sandy shores, the large bays, the Trodos mountains, in the heart of the island, the Besparmak mountain range along the northern coast, separated by the Mesaoria plain that hosts the capital, Nicosia. Divided in two by the border – or “green line” – that separates the Republic of Cyprus in the south, from the Turkish Republic of Cyprus in the north, this “Berlin of the 21st century” does not lack interesting sights. In the Turkish side one can admire beautiful mosques, like Arabahmet, Selimiye, near the great bazar, and the ruins of Bedasten, a former Orthodox church. Near the green line instead, is the town of Lanarca where you can visit the double church of Agia Faneromeni or the Orthodox cathedral of Agios Ioannis.

You can then visit the Costanza Bastion, built by the Venetians, where you find the archbishop’s palace and the mosque of Bayraktar. Testimonies of its Byzantine history are found in the Museum dedicated to this civilization, while the 10,000 years of human settlements on this island cab be admired in the Cyprus Museum. Finally, you should see the Petra Tou Romiou reef – this is where Aphrodite touched ground for the first time.
