LIMASSOL

A dream amidst the islands

With its enchanted landscape, crystal clear sea and historical sights, Cyprus is a dream amidst the islands of the eastern Mare Nostrum. An MSC Cruise to this island offers the perfect balance between entertainment, leisure and culture.

With an MSC Mediterranean Cruise, you will sail to Limassol, a beautiful city and custodian of the island's thousands of years of history. The numerous ancient archaeological sites and fortified polis make this island an earthly paradise for those interested in learning about its history, and those who want to immerse themselves in its authentic and unspoiled nature.

An MSC Excursion will take you back in time. The first stop of this leap into the past is Kourion, a vast archaeological site where the theatre, the early Christian basilica and some villas with fascinating mosaics are still well preserved and open to the public. A short distance away is the Sanctuary of Apollo Hylates. In this architectural complex, it is still possible to recognize three distinct and perfectly identifiable periods of architecture, thanks to the continuous restoration work. The village of Omodos, on the other hand, not far from Limassol, another destination of the excursion, is one of the most picturesque in Cyprus. It has Byzantine origins, and since ancient times it has been renowned for the cultivation of its superb varieties of grapes and for the craftsmanship that is still flourishing and very active to this day.

A masterpiece of medieval architecture is the castle of Kolossi, built by the Knights of St. John in the 13th century. You can reach it thanks to an MSC Excursion that will guide you to the famous drawbridge and spiral staircase to access the stone tower of the castle, 21 m high, from where you will enjoy a breathtaking view of the adjacent vineyards. These represent the legacy of the Knights Templar to whom the English ruler entrusted the island, which were already producing wine and sugar cane.

Treat yourself to an MSC Excursion to the throbbing heart of the island, taking a relaxing walk along the wild trails of the Troodos mountains, along the river Kryos, from where you will reach the beautiful Millomeri waterfalls, not far from the Caledonia Falls. Accessible only recently, the magical Millomeri falls have a scenic 15 m jump and are considered the highest on the island, offering an unforgettable sight to those venturing into this sublime, primordial film landscape.

    Cyprus

    The island of love
    The island of love

According to mythology, Cyprus is the birthplace of Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love. One cannot but be reminded of this during you’re a vacation in Cyprus.

    The landscape is spectacular
: the low, sandy shores, the large bays, the Trodos mountains, in the heart of the island, the Besparmak mountain range along the northern coast, separated by the Mesaoria plain that hosts the capital, Nicosia. Divided in two by the border – or “green line” – that separates the Republic of Cyprus in the south, from the Turkish Republic of Cyprus in the north, this “Berlin of the 21st century” does not lack interesting sights. In the Turkish side one can admire beautiful mosques, like Arabahmet, Selimiye, near the great bazar, and the ruins of Bedasten, a former Orthodox church. Near the green line instead, is the town of Lanarca where you can visit the double church of Agia Faneromeni or the Orthodox cathedral of Agios Ioannis.

You can then visit the Costanza Bastion, built by the Venetians, where you find the archbishop’s palace and the mosque of Bayraktar. Testimonies of its Byzantine history are found in the Museum dedicated to this civilization, while the 10,000 years of human settlements on this island cab be admired in the Cyprus Museum. Finally, you should see the Petra Tou Romiou reef – this is where Aphrodite touched ground for the first time.
